Vancouver, Canada, October 19, 2002
Well the time has come to lace up my boots and hit
the open road. After spending two wonderful, sun-filled
weeks in Vancouver (unbelievable for mid-October), I
found an inexpensive ticket to the Yucatan
peninsula. I depart Vancouver Sunday at 4 a.m. and
arrive in Cancun, Mexico
It is Saturday 10 a.m. I need a mosquito net and some
wool socks. I have packed and unpacked, reducing more
and more each time. My friend Morris says that all a
person needs is a toothbrush and some cash. I now have
a 30 litre pack and a mandolin. Maybe someday I will
be able to travel like that but not today.
Then I start thinking of all the little things that
I might need, like a toothbrush case. I have taken at
least 20 pounds of little things out of my pack. Modern
conveniences are not so convenient when you want to
travel light. I am also aware that this is just pre-trip
jitters. Once I get moving things will lighten up.
Speaking of lightening up, I bought a journal to record
the significant events of this trip. It is a black,
semi-gloss, hard cover journal with the Japanese symbol
for light embossed on the front. I believe that all
travels involve discovery and to this end, light is
crucial. So I guess what I am saying is I want to travel
light but more importantly I want to travel with light.
Be brave as you walk your path. See you in Mexico.
"May
your days be long and full of light
May your garden grow into a paradise
May the stars shine bright and full around
May you live your life in the love you have found"
