Isla Mujeres, Mexico, October 20,
2002
Welcome to Isla Mujeres.
Thanks to the advice of my friend Dorothy I decided
to stay a day or two instead of zipping off to Guatemala
as I had originally intended.
I am writing this from a hammock strung between two
trees in a courtyard of a very nice hostel called the
"Poc Na". It's a great place to meet people and not
nearly as expensive as Cancun. Now I can relax and acclimatize.
The Yucatan Pennisula is one of the few places in Mexico
that borders the Caribbean. It is a beautiful, inspirational
location surrounded by crystal turquoise water, teeming
with an abundance of exotic plants and creatures. The
laidback lifestyle is fueled by the international traveling
community.
It is night now. The silvery green moon is full, high
in the southern sky. A cool breeze wafts through the
open palapa (veranda) of the hostel. I am thinking of
all the events that led up to this journey. The web
page came together very quickly (still working on photo
program ... coming soon) thanks to a long friendship
with my buddy Rob in Vancouver. The sojourn in Prince
Albert with friends old and new alike, was a time for
me to reflect on my life journey. It was also a chance
for me to establish funds for the journey with a summer
job at SHARE, thanks guys. My stay in Calgary where
I connected with family and spent my birthday was a
very special and significant time. I also got to play
some music with Jim and Tom and the Kereluk clan.
It seems that many things have pointed in the direction
of this trip. Many doors were opened or passage was
made easier by coincidental meetings. I know that this
journey is more than just travel involving music. For
me it is not where you travel but how you travel. Latin
America is an adventure and a test of will but it is
also a test of spirit and acknowledgement of the greater
powers that guide us. It is a conclusion and a beginning.
It will be all that I make it.
I am headed for San
Cristobal de Las Casas , which is the major overland
entry point to Guatemala. The bus trip is 20 hours.
That should be interesting. I will tell more of the
island stories and the people I met at a later date.
Happy travels and be brave.
